Get your School Garden off to a great start with one of our new Allotment Plots

Date Posted: 01 February 2014

At Gardening With Children and The Recycleworks we are aware just how crucial funding and grants are to each school and how important it is that they are used effectively and efficiently to buy good quality products at the right price that are built to last.

Gardening is now becoming an important part of the School Curriculum with Food Growing being a NEW curriculum priority in schools, especially London Schools. The thought of setting up a school garden can be very daunting so with this in mind we have designed a range of Allotment Plots which are available in four different sizes making them suitable for Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools.

Carrots

All the Allotment Plots consist of Wooden Raised Beds with integrated Compost Bins, the Plots can all be expanded with the addition of extra Raised Bed or Compost Bin Modules, they are easy to assemble without nails, screws or holes to dig, we provide a suggested layout but this can be changed on site to suite your needs and available space.

There are many benefits to growing crops in Wooden Raised Beds especially in Schools:

Crops are grown at a height easily accessible to children and wheelchair gardeners taking the bending out of gardening.

Crops can easily be reached from both sides of the bed without walking on the soil, so there is no soil compaction meaning less digging and less work.

Raised Beds offer improved drainage which is good news for those that live in areas prone to flooding and also during prolonged wet weather.

If you live in an area that has poor soil you can fill your Raised Beds with imported good quality top soil and compost to get your crops off to good start.

Crops can be planted earlier in Spring as the soil warms up faster, they are easy to cover with film, fleece or netting  using cloche hoops and cloche clips to protect crops and promote growth.

Raised Beds are suitable for growing a wide variety of Soft Fruits, Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers, Alpines, Small Trees and Shrubs.

Compost Bins have been integrated into each allotment plot, making them easily accessible to fill with garden waste or to remove the valuable nutrient rich compost to add to your Raised Beds, their prominent position will also raise awareness of the important part they play in recycling in the garden.
