Have your own continuous supply of fresh salad leaves!

Now is a great time to be getting started with your summer supply of tasty fresh Salad Leaves and Herbs.  There is nothing better than having a a nice selection all ready to eat when you need them.

So for a continuous supply of Salad Leaves and Herbs all summer long here is how to get started.

Get a Container

These containers can be located on grass, flags or tarmac and are ideal for putting just outside the kitchen door. To get the best results from your crops they should be positioned somewhere sunny and sheltered.

We have some mixed Red and Green Salad Leaves which can be harvested by picking the leaves only, thus leaving the plant intact to produce more and more leaves. These can be resown when your original plants are looking a bit tired. Herbs are lovely freshly picked and varieties include Dill, Basil, Sky Rocket, Parsley, Coriander, Chives.

Get some Good Quality Peat-Free Compost

To give your salad and herb crops the best possible start take a look at the Vital Earth Vegetable Compost.  Found to be the BEST by WHICH, a panel of experts proved this to be the best peat-free growing media and better than all composting media (including peat-based types) in the UK. 
 

Sowing

Fill your container three quarters full with compost.  Sow your seed selection thinly, label and water well. You may need to protect your crop with Fleece if a frost is forecast.

Harvesting

As the seeds begin to grow and the plants establish, thin out and harvest the larger leaves.  As the weather warms there should be enough salad leaves/herbs to harvest every few days using a Herb Mini Snip.  Re-sow if your plants start looking tired. Water your containers in dry weather but be careful not to overwater. If you have a large crop of herbs why not try drying them using a Herb Drying Rack or a Herb and Fruit Dryer for use in the winter when fresh leaves are not available.
