Sow and Grow Herbs on your Windowsill

 

Basil

Basil is a tender, leafy annual with a sweet, aniseed type flavour that is unlike any other herb, it is a member of the mint family which includes Rosemary, Lavender and Oregano.

In Italy the Basil plant was thought to symbolise love, yet the Greeks and Romans believed that Basil was a sign of hatred and evil - if Basil leaves were put in a pot, they would turn into scorpions.

Basil can be used in many dishes it is popular in Italian cooking on pizzas and in pasta.

Getting started

Sow about 10/12 seeds evenly spaced, 0.5cm deep in small pots of good free-draining compost, water well and put in a warm place such as on a windowsill or in a propagator 15-20C (60-68F) is ideal.

Seedlings should appear in 7-14 days, thin out and remove any weak ones, allow to grow on in a bright but cooler position when they out grow their pot repot them all together into a larger pot.

Basil doesn’t like to be wet, just keep the compost moist and allow to dry out between waterings.

Harvest your Basil by picking stems above a set of leaves this will encourage side shoots to grow and form a bushy plant, remove any flowers that appear to stop the plants going to seed.

Make regular sowings throughout the year for a continuous crop. 

 

 

Parsley

There are two types of Parsley curly leaf and flat leaf which is often referred to as Italian parsley it is easier to grow and has more flavour, Parsley is rich in Iron and Vitamins A, B and C.

Parsley is a member of the Umbelliferae family, which also includes carrots, dill, caraway, celery, cumin, and the poisonous hemlock.

Parsley was thought to be sacred by the Greeks and was used in garlands for celebrations, chewing Parsley can freshen your breath for example from eating garlic.

Parsley leaves are used to garnish dishes and as an ingredient in tomato, fish, egg, vegetable and meat dishes.

Getting started

Parsley likes a moist but not soggy compost, harvest your Parsley by picking the leaves.

Make 3 or 4 sowings throughout the year for a continuous crop.
